Claude Computer Use: When AI Learns to "Use the Mouse" for You
Anthropic's new "Claude Computer Use" gives AI the power to control your computer—from browsing the web to attending Zoom meetings. Here's why it's a game-changer and what it means for the future of work.
1. It's No Longer Just a "Chatbot", It's Your "Hands"
In the past, getting an AI to do something meant endlessly copying and pasting text. Now, Claude has been granted the ability to "hold the mouse and type on the keyboard" just like a real human.
- Autonomous Operation: You just give it a command in Natural Language, and it will look at the screen, move the cursor, click buttons, and type text into any software.
- Remote Control: The beauty (and the danger) is that you can command it from your phone. Sitting at a coffee shop while controlling your Macbook at home to write a report is simply mind-blowing.
- For macOS First (Temporarily): Currently, this feature is prioritized for macOS. Windows users will have to wait a little longer.
2. The Ultimate Workplace "Cheat Code"?
Looking at the latest demos and transcripts, the practical scenerios for this are both hilarious and astonishingly real:
- Automated Job Applications: Claude can autonomously open a browser, search for jobs, draft tailored cover letters, and send them out in bulk.
- The Interview "Prompter": It can silently listen to a Zoom interview and feed you answers for coding challenges (like LeetCode) in a hidden tab. We call this "augmented thinking," though what your boss calls it is a different story.
- Attending Meetings for You: Combined with AI voice models, Claude could join a Zoom call, listen to the discussion, and even respond in your own voice: "Yes, I understand, I will deploy that right away!"
- Faking Hard Work: It can finish writing code in 5 minutes, but be programmed to wait until exactly 4:30 PM on Friday to click "Send", making it look like you've been grinding all week.
3. The Battle Between "Closed" and "Open"
Besides Claude, there is also OpenClaw—a free, open-source version that can run on various AI models. However, the differences are stark:
- OpenClaw: Like a "modded car"—powerful, free, but highly combustible (high security risk, easily hacked if you don't know what you're doing).
- Claude Computer Use: Like a dealership car—comes with a warranty, asks your permission before opening apps, and is much more secure, but it costs money.
4. What's the Future for Us?
The CEO of Anthropic once predicted that 50% of junior legal, consulting, and finance jobs would be "wiped out" in the next few years. That sounds tense, but from my perspective, AI only steals the jobs of those who work like machines.
If we learn to use Claude as a "powerful assistant" to free up our labor, instead of letting it completely replace our brains, we will continue to thrive.
Bottom line: This technology is a double-edged sword. Used to optimize workflows, it's a stroke of genius. Used purely for "fraud," you'll eventually get caught. The best approach is to learn how to control it before it controls your computer.
What do you think? Would you dare hand over your thousand-dollar Macbook for Claude to "play" with? Leave a comment and let's discuss!
