Reception.ai vs Orchexa: Why the $22 Tool and the $199 Runtime Aren't Rivals

Reception.ai at $22 answers your phone. Orchexa at $199 runs Zalo, Facebook, Instagram and outbound too. Choosing is not a feature comparison — it is a diagnosis: phone problem or operations problem?

Reception.ai vs Orchexa: Why the $22 Tool and the $199 Runtime Aren't Rivals

Reception.ai and Orchexa look like competitors and are not. Reception.ai is a $22/month point solution from ElevenLabs that does one job — answer your inbound phone. Orchexa is a $199/month multi-agent orchestration runtime that wants to run your entire customer operation across Zalo, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, web chat and phone. Choosing between them is not a feature comparison. It is a diagnosis: do you have a phone problem or an operations problem?

Get the diagnosis right and the decision takes five minutes. Get it wrong and you either overpay 10x for capability you never use, or you buy a $22 tool that cannot touch the channel where 80% of your customers actually are.

What is Reception.ai?

Reception.ai is a product from ElevenLabs, shipped under the ElevenAgents brand. It is the templated, self-service version of their full voice platform, narrowed to a single job: answering inbound calls.

You paste your website URL, it crawls your services, hours, team and location, assigns you a US phone number, and you are live in under five minutes. It answers in 70+ languages, books into a real calendar with staff and resource assignment, and logs every call with transcripts to a built-in CRM.

Entry price: $22/month. Ceiling: $99/month for 500 minutes, with $0.40/min overage.

What is Orchexa?

Orchexa positions itself as "The Operating Layer for Enterprise Intelligence" — explicitly not a tool, but a runtime. Its architecture is four layers under one control plane: a unified data fabric, a multi-agent orchestration runtime, a policy-aware decision engine, and an execution runtime with rollback and audit.

In practice, for an SMB, that translates to something more recognizable: an omni-channel AI agent that handles web chat, Facebook Messenger, Zalo OA, Instagram DM, WhatsApp and phone calls — inbound and outbound — with lead capture, a mini CRM, order creation, workflow automation, and output guardrails for PII redaction and hallucination control.

Entry price: $199/month ($159 if paid yearly). Ceiling before Enterprise: $399/month.

One detail worth naming up front: Orchexa is built for Vietnam. Voice overage is quoted in đồng (2.500đ/min), the demo locale specifies addressing customers as "anh/chị" with VND currency, and Zalo OA is a first-class channel on every plan including Starter. No Western competitor treats Zalo as a first-class channel.

Where Reception.ai clearly wins

1. Time-to-value. Five minutes versus 48 hours is not a small gap. In a hands-on test, Reception.ai scraped a company's Team page, extracted every staff member with their role, and mapped them into individual booking calendars — with zero configuration.

2. Price floor. $22 versus $199 is a 9x difference at entry. If all you need is after-hours phone cover, Orchexa's floor is hard to justify.

3. Voice quality. ElevenLabs is the vendor that most voice-agent platforms resell. Reception.ai runs on the original engine with no middleman.

4. Verifiable trust. ISO 27001 and ISO 42001 are published and auditable. Orchexa's site claims end-to-end encryption, zero-trust, RBAC and data residency control — all plausible, none independently certified as far as I can find.

5. Vendor durability. ElevenLabs is not going to disappear. That matters when the system answers your phone.

Where Orchexa clearly wins

1. Channel coverage — the decisive gap for Vietnam. Reception.ai handles phone, chat and a booking page. Orchexa handles Zalo OA, Facebook Messenger, Instagram DM and WhatsApp on top of phone. For a Vietnamese SMB, the phone is often the minority channel. A tool that cannot reach Zalo is not solving the actual problem.

2. Outbound calling. Reception.ai cannot dial out, at any price. This kills speed-to-lead (form submitted → instant callback), appointment reminder calls, follow-ups and reactivation campaigns. Orchexa includes outbound from the Growth tier.

3. Voice economics at scale. This inverts the price story completely. Reception.ai charges $0.40/min overage; Orchexa charges roughly $0.10/min (Growth) or $0.07/min (Business) — a 4–6x difference. Run the math at 2,000 minutes/month:

The $22 tool becomes the expensive option somewhere around 700–800 minutes/month. Below that, Reception.ai wins on price. Above it, Orchexa does — decisively.

4. Brand voice cloning. Reception.ai does not offer it. Orchexa advertises "your brand voice, cloned into every call" from the Growth tier. (A pleasant irony, given that ElevenLabs invented the category.)

5. Model independence. Reception.ai locks you to the ElevenLabs stack. Orchexa routes across providers, which matters for cost control, data residency and not being hostage to one vendor's pricing changes.

6. Sovereign deployment. On-prem, VPC and air-gapped options exist at the Enterprise tier. Reception.ai has no self-hosting story at all.

Where you should be skeptical of both

Honest research means flagging what does not check out, and both products have gaps.

On Reception.ai: it is very new. There is essentially one detailed independent review in existence. Its documented weakness is barge-in handling — when a caller interrupts, the AI is slow to notice and keeps talking, which is the friction point most likely to annoy real customers. And it is not HIPAA compliant, full stop.

On Orchexa, three things deserve scrutiny:

First, the verification gap. Orchexa has almost no independent web footprint. No funding record, no founder profile, no third-party reviews, no G2 or Trustpilot presence I could locate. For comparison, Retell AI has 2,200+ verified G2 reviews. This is not evidence of a bad product — every company starts at zero — but it means every claim on the site is unverified by anyone but the vendor.

Second, the metrics on the homepage are product mockups. Figures like "28,406 chat conversations," "94.2% customer XP" and a subscriber counter reading 12.6 million appear inside UI demonstration screenshots. Treat them as illustrations of the interface, not as audited customer results.

Third, the "ORCHEXA Fast / Pro / Max / Ultra" engines are almost certainly white-labeled third-party models, not in-house ones — the site itself says the runtime routes across OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others. That is fine and common, but it means the branded tiers are a pricing wrapper rather than proprietary technology. Worth knowing before you assume you are buying original research.

A shared caveat: Reception.ai's headline setup experience is US-first. Non-US businesses must connect their own phone number with extra configuration. Before planning around it in Vietnam, confirm with ElevenLabs support that a Vietnamese number can be attached. Every other calculation depends on that answer.

Which one should your business choose?

Skip the feature lists. Answer four questions.

Question 1: Where do your customers actually message you?

If the honest answer includes Zalo, Facebook or Instagram, Reception.ai is disqualified regardless of price. It cannot reach those channels. This single question resolves most Vietnamese SMB cases.

Question 2: Do you need to call people, or only be called?

Need speed-to-lead, reminder calls, follow-ups or reactivation? Reception.ai cannot do it at any tier. Orchexa can from $299/month.

Question 3: What is your monthly voice volume?

Question 4: How much does verifiability matter to you?

If you are in a regulated sector, need certifications for procurement, or simply cannot tolerate vendor risk, ElevenLabs' published ISO 27001 and ISO 42001 are real and Orchexa's are not published. If you are a 10-person salon, this matters far less than channel coverage.

The straight recommendation

Choose Reception.ai if: you are US-based or have a working US number, your problem is genuinely just the phone, you are under 500 minutes/month, you want it live today, and you value a certified vendor over feature breadth.

Choose Orchexa if: you are in Vietnam or serve Vietnamese customers, Zalo and Facebook carry real conversation volume, you need outbound, you run more than ~800 voice minutes/month, or you want model independence and a self-hosting path.

Choose neither if: you are in US healthcare (neither is HIPAA-certified for this use), or your workflows need genuine custom logic — deep qualification scripts, complex branching, legacy system integration. In that case build on the full ElevenAgents platform, Retell AI, or Vapi.

And the pragmatic move: both offer free trials with no credit card — 14 days for Reception.ai, 7 for Orchexa. Run both on the same real calls for a week. That week of evidence will outrank every comparison table, including this one.

FAQ

Are Reception.ai and Orchexa direct competitors? No. Reception.ai is a $22/month single-purpose inbound phone receptionist. Orchexa is a $199/month multi-agent orchestration runtime covering six channels. They overlap only on the phone-answering use case.

Which is cheaper, Reception.ai or Orchexa? Reception.ai below roughly 700–800 voice minutes per month — its entry tier is $22 versus $199. Above that threshold Orchexa is cheaper, because its overage is about $0.07–0.10/min versus Reception.ai's $0.40/min.

Does Reception.ai support Zalo or Facebook Messenger? No. Reception.ai covers phone, chat and a booking page only. Orchexa includes Zalo OA, Facebook Messenger, Instagram DM and WhatsApp on top of phone.

Can either platform make outbound calls? Only Orchexa, from its Growth tier ($299/month) upward. Reception.ai is inbound-only by design at every price point.

Which is better for a Vietnamese business? Orchexa, on channel coverage alone — Zalo OA is included on every plan and pricing is localized in VND. Reception.ai's setup flow is US-first and requires bringing your own phone number outside the US.

Is Orchexa a trustworthy vendor? Unknown, and that is the honest answer. It has near-zero independent web footprint — no published funding, third-party reviews, or certifications. Its capability claims are unverified by anyone but the vendor. Trial it before committing.

Which has better voice quality? Reception.ai, almost certainly. ElevenLabs is the voice vendor that most competing platforms resell, so Reception.ai runs the original engine directly.
